“O Antiphons” provide an opportunity to reflect on the various titles that the Old Testament writers gave to the longed-for Messiah: O Wisdom…O Adonai…O Root of Jesse…O Key of David…O Rising Sun (Dayspring)…O King of the Nations…O Emmanuel. These titles speak of our longing to be embraced by the Wisdom of ages; by the God of unspeakable names who summoned Moses from the burning bush; by the root of Jesse and the key of David who rules nations and liberates prisoners; by the morning star, the eternal sun of righteousness; by the king of nations who comes to save; and by Emmanuel, God with us and in us who works for us and through us. Such are the longings of Advent. Such are the prayers of God’s people expressed in all of Advent’s liturgies.
